The Japanese maple stands as one of the most elegant ornamental trees available to gardeners today. Native to Japan, Korea, and parts of China, this small deciduous tree has captivated gardeners worldwide with its extraordinary leaf forms and stunning seasonal color changes.

Growing to between 15-25 feet tall, Japanese maples feature distinctive palmately lobed leaves that transform from vibrant spring greens to spectacular autumn displays of crimson, orange, and gold. The tree’s graceful branching pattern creates an artistic silhouette, particularly visible during winter months when deciduous varieties lose their foliage.

Japanese maples thrive in partially shaded locations with protection from harsh afternoon sun and strong winds. They prefer slightly acidic, well-draining soil with consistent moisture. While established trees demonstrate moderate drought tolerance, regular watering during dry periods ensures optimal health and appearance.

These versatile trees serve as magnificent focal points in Asian-inspired gardens, woodland settings, or container plantings for smaller varieties. Their relatively slow growth rate makes them perfect for smaller landscapes where space constraints exist. Popular cultivars include ‘Bloodgood’ with its deep purple foliage, the weeping ‘Crimson Queen’, and the vibrant ‘Sango-kaku’ (Coral Bark Maple) with its striking red stems in winter.

These aromatic plants have earned global appreciation not only for their sweet scent but also for their delicate star-shaped flowers.

Common jasmine varieties include the intensely fragrant Jasminum officinale (common jasmine), the winter-blooming Jasminum nudiflorum (winter jasmine), and the versatile Jasminum polyanthum (pink jasmine). Each offers distinctive growth habits and flowering periods, allowing gardeners to enjoy jasmine’s charm throughout much of the year.

Most jasmine varieties prefer full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil with moderate moisture. Climbing types require support structures such as trellises or arbors to showcase their cascading blooms effectively. Regular pruning after flowering helps maintain shape and encourages robust blooming in subsequent seasons.

Junipers represent one of the most diverse and adaptable coniferous groups available to landscapers. These evergreen shrubs and trees belong to the cypress family and feature approximately 50-70 species distributed across the Northern Hemisphere. Popular varieties include the spreading Juniperus horizontalis ‘Blue Rug’ for ground cover applications, the architectural Juniperus chinensis ‘Torulosa’ (Hollywood Juniper), and the stately Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar). The jade plant stands as one of the most recognizable and beloved houseplants worldwide. This succulent native to South Africa features thick, glossy, oval-shaped leaves and develops a tree-like appearance with age, earning its common nickname “money tree” or “lucky plant” in many cultures.

With proper care, jade plants can thrive for decades, developing thick, woody stems that support their fleshy, emerald-green foliage. Mature specimens occasionally produce delicate star-shaped white or pink flowers during winter months when exposed to cooler temperatures and reduced watering.

As succulents, jade plants require bright light—preferably several hours of direct sunlight daily—and infrequent but thorough watering. Their drought-resistant nature makes them forgiving of occasional neglect, ideal for beginning plant enthusiasts or travelers. Well-draining soil specifically formulated for succulents prevents root rot, their primary vulnerability.

Beyond their ornamental value, jade plants offer practical benefits as air-purifying houseplants. Their ability to propagate easily from leaf or stem cuttings allows gardeners to share these plants with friends and family. In feng shui traditions, jade plants symbolize prosperity and good fortune, frequently appearing in businesses and homes as living good luck charms.

Jacob’s ladder brings delicate beauty to shaded gardens with its distinctive foliage and charming flowers. This perennial herbaceous plant derives its common name from the ladder-like arrangement of its compound leaves, reminiscent of the biblical ladder in Jacob’s dream.

Most species reach 1-2 feet in height with an upright, clumping habit. The pinnately compound leaves feature multiple small leaflets arranged along the stem, creating the signature ladder-like appearance. During late spring and early summer, loose clusters of bell-shaped flowers in shades of blue, purple, or white appear above the foliage, attracting pollinators to the garden.

Jacob’s ladder performs best in partial to full shade with rich, consistently moist soil. Good air circulation helps prevent powdery mildew, which can sometimes affect the foliage in hot, humid conditions. Most varieties appreciate cooler climates and may struggle during hot summers without adequate shade and moisture.

This versatile perennial works beautifully in woodland gardens, shade borders, and wildflower meadows with dappled light. Popular species include the native North American Polemonium reptans (Creeping Jacob’s Ladder) and the taller Polemonium caeruleum (Greek Valerian) with its more prominent flower displays. Selected cultivars offer variegated foliage for additional visual interest in shaded landscapes.

The Japanese plum, more commonly known as loquat, offers both ornamental value and edible fruit in warm-climate gardens. Despite its name, this evergreen tree actually originated in China before spreading throughout East Asia and eventually to other parts of the world with suitable growing conditions.

Growing to 20-30 feet tall and wide, loquat features large, corrugated, leathery leaves with a dark green surface and rusty-brown undersides. Unlike most fruit trees, loquat flowers in autumn or early winter, producing fragrant white blossoms in terminal clusters. The resulting yellow-orange fruits ripen in late winter to early spring, measuring 1-2 inches long with a sweet-tart flavor reminiscent of a blend between apple and mango.

Loquat trees thrive in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. They demonstrate good drought tolerance once established but produce better fruit with regular watering. While the tree itself shows cold hardiness to about 10°F (-12°C), the flowers and developing fruit suffer damage at temperatures below 27°F (-3°C), limiting fruit production in colder regions.

Beyond its edible yields, loquat serves as an excellent evergreen shade tree or screening plant in appropriate climates. The fruits can be eaten fresh, made into preserves, or used in various culinary applications. In traditional Chinese medicine, loquat leaves have applications for respiratory conditions, though modern scientific evidence remains limited.

  • The stems are strong and purposeful, you won't find this plant succumbing to strong winds, and are almost entirely purple. Flowers, appearing from July and continuing until autumn, the plants are crowned with large, domed panicles of pinkish-purple nectar-rich flowers, made up of numerous small flowers, so rich in pollen and nectar that they provide a feast for butterflies, bees
  • Sowing: Sow seed in cool weather in autumn or early spring. Sow the seeds very finely onto the surface of trays or pots containing moist seed compost. Just cover with a sprinkling of sieved compost or vermiculite. Place in a plastic bag or cover pots or trays with perspex and place in a position to maintain an optimum temperature of 20°C (68°F) Keep the compost moist but not saturated, water from the base of the container and drain thoroughly.

Joe Pye weed brings dramatic vertical presence and butterfly-attracting powers to late summer gardens. This North American native perennial, formerly classified in the genus Eupatorium, earned its common name from a Native American healer who reportedly used the plant to treat typhus.

The impressive stature of Joe Pye weed ranges from 4-7 feet tall, depending on the species and growing conditions. Whorls of serrated, lance-shaped leaves encircle the sturdy stems, providing architectural interest throughout the growing season. In late summer, large, dome-shaped clusters of tiny pink-purple flowers crown the plants, creating a magnificent display that persists into early fall.

This adaptable plant performs well in full sun to partial shade in consistently moist, rich soil. While established plants tolerate occasional drought, they reach their most impressive size with regular moisture. Their natural habitat includes meadows, woodland edges, and riparian areas, offering clues to their preferred growing conditions.

Joe Pye weed serves as an outstanding addition to rain gardens, naturalistic plantings, butterfly gardens, and mixed perennial borders where height is needed. Popular species include Eutrochium purpureum (Sweet Joe Pye Weed) with its vanilla-scented flowers and Eutrochium maculatum (Spotted Joe Pye Weed) with its purple-spotted stems. Several compact cultivars now exist for smaller garden spaces.

10. Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba)

Last updated: October 28, 2025

The jujube tree combines ornamental qualities with nutritious fruit production. Also known as Chinese date or red date, this deciduous tree has been cultivated for its fruit and medicinal properties for over 4,000 years throughout Asia.

Mature jujube trees typically reach 15-35 feet tall with an open, somewhat irregular branching pattern. The glossy green leaves may turn attractive yellow before dropping in autumn. Small, inconspicuous yellowish-white flowers appear in late spring, followed by olive-sized fruits that ripen from green to red-brown. When fully ripe, the fruits develop a wrinkled appearance and sweet, apple-like flavor with notes of caramel.

Jujube trees demonstrate exceptional adaptability to different growing conditions. They thrive in full sun and tolerate various soil types, including alkaline and poor soils that challenge many fruit trees. Their outstanding drought resistance once established makes them sustainable choices for water-conscious gardening.

Beyond their edible fruits, which can be consumed fresh, dried, or preserved, jujube trees offer practical benefits in difficult landscaping situations. Their relatively small size makes them suitable for urban gardens, while their late leafing habit reduces spring frost damage concerns. In traditional Chinese medicine, jujube fruits have long held significance for supporting overall wellness, particularly regarding sleep and digestion.
